Rejected: Gay Tissue Donor

Stuff has report that Corey Eteveneaux was critically injured in February and put on live support for 4 days to enable human tissue to be donated. It was then rejected as he was a gay man.

The current rules exclude men who have sex with other men from donating blood or tissue for 12 months as determined by the New Zealand Blood Service. However they can donate organs according to Organ Donation NZ.

Rainbow Youth questioned the policy in that is only targeting men who have sex with men (where known) whereas the presence of HIV is known within 3 months and the policy also excludes others who may be at risk.
